Bio
Erik is a Partner with KMSC Law LLP, providing representation in his primary practice areas of surface rights and expropriation law. His extensive experience in surface rights has made him a trusted advisor for landowners navigating the complexities of energy development. He assists clients with surface lease negotiations, rental reviews, right-of-entry orders, expropriation matters, compensation recovery and regulatory compliance. Erik is committed to ensuring landowners receive fair compensation and understand their rights when dealing with energy companies, municipal bodies, and other stakeholders. He has appeared on behalf of clients at all levels of court in the province and before various boards and tribunals, including the Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta Utilities Commission, and the Land and Property Rights Tribunal (formerly the Surface Rights Board).
Beyond his work in surface rights, Erik also has experience in business law, residential real estate, and estate planning and administration.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Erik earned his Bachelor of Commerce in Business from the University of Alberta in 2009 and obtained his Law Degree from the University of Kent in England in 2013. He was accredited by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada in 2015 and called to the Alberta Bar on July 15, 2016.
Erik and his wife, Alissa, are proud parents of their sons, Llewyn and Bram. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, reading, running, and spending time with his dogs.
